Sand Ceremonies

So how, or why should you have a sand ceremony?

A sand ceremony is actually cool. You can join two places in the world together as you symbolically join yourself to another. You can create one, a one that can never be un-joined.Or are you the one to be able to unpick, decentralise or indeed separate the sands of time?

If you are, then this ceremony is not for you!

For most, a sand ceremony is symbolic. It brings people and families together. Its symbolism stems from the Unity Candle Ceremony which depicts single lives being merged to form a new bond.  The individual grains of sand can never again be separated, so too is the joining of lives and love, of emotions, and care for the family gathered for the ceremony.

Sand ceremonies also bring other emotions and memories with them. The love of the beach, happy childhood memories, and the times of sand. The sand ceremony can evoke memories of the sands of time that have passed and so couples must be aware of all of the emotions that the ceremony can release before they decide this is for them.

But if you do decide to go with a sand ceremony then embrace it, embrace it fully!!!! Gather the sand from your favourite beach, dye it and dry it…then mix it on the day.

Do yourself a favour though…..get the right equipment. Make sure that the central vessel, the one that collects the sand, has a stopper, or a lid so that you can bring it home. What a cool ornament. A beautiful reminder of a special moment, a moment captured in the forevermore and locked  down,  created because of you got married.

Your celebrant will explain the meaning of the ceremony to your guests and make sure that they fully understand the symbolism. Words can differ and you can make sure that your theme is reflected or your thoughts on unity. Indeed, you can even choose to write the ceremony yourself. The following sample wording will centre you and allow you to create your own special ceremony.

As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated, our hope for you today is that your lives together would be blended like the seven seas and may your love swirl around each other like the changing tides.

Often marriage is viewed as the union of two people. Yet marriages not only unite the couple, it unites the families. Out of these two families, a new family will be created, thus offering unique and wonderful opportunities to simply increase the number of loving and caring relationships you have in your lives.

A sand ceremony is a beautiful way to include the couple’s children in the ceremony as the forming of a new family is celebrated.

Sample wording :Today we invite the couple’s children to join them at the ceremony table where together we join sand for all eternity. For just as the individual grains of sand can no longer be separated and so you lives move forward united as one.sand ceremony 3

Whatever you do, you enjoy the process. Get your own sand, make it personal and join it together with your loved one. A sand ceremony is also a lovely way of getting children involved on the day.
